Types of Communities - Lesson

This week we are learning about the three different types of communities; urban, suburban, and rural. I have created a lesson that includes reading a community story (The Little House), a slideshow of the definitions of each community and a picture that goes with the community, and an activity for the kids to complete. This is an awesome lesson that the kids really enjoy! This is also a great activity for a SUB to use in Social Studies! Here is an example of what the activity looks like.

Music to my Ears!

I love music, and love listening to it whenever I am trying to get something done. Having a chatty class, I thought I would never be able to listen to music while they were working. It could only make them louder, right?! I decided to try out a few stations/songs to see if maybe we could find something that would help them concentrate while trying to complete their work. Out of all the stations I tried, the Jack Johnson playlist on YouTube was the best. It is very easy going, mellow music, which sets a calming classroom vibe. This has also turned into an incentive for my class. The students want to get started on their work so that I will turn on the music.

Go ahead and turn some tunes on in your class today and see if it helps get the kiddos going!

Warm-up's that Save the Day!

Man, I love four day work weeks! Nothing like coming off a three day weekend knowing you only have four days of work before your next glorious weekend!

Something that has really helped my mornings run WAY smoother is this awesome warm-up review. Each kid has their own morning spiral they use to complete their morning warm-ups. They start with the date and complete the warm-up for the day. This PowerPoint has 26 days worth of review activities. They include ABC order, nouns, verbs, and adjective review, fixing sentences, grammar review, synonym and antonym review, etc.

This has been SO beneficial to my students! It is a mini review lesson every morning and gets my kids brains going! The best part is, it's only a DOLLAR!

It says it is for August and September, but it can be used any month. I plan on making one for each month of the school year.

Hello Out There!

Hello wonderful people!

I love reading blogs about teaching and getting ideas from wonderful fellow teachers! I have decided to start a blog to show some of the things that work great in my class.

I am a second grade teacher in Houston, Texas and I just started my fifth year of teaching. I have taught Kindergarten, first, and second grade.
